Faculty AI Readiness and Responsible Integration in Higher Education: Policy, Practice, and Academic Integrity
Important submission requirement: This Research Topic has been curated specifically for presenters of the 2nd ADU International Conference on Education – Advancing Teaching Practices through AI. To ensure the integrity of this editorial effort, only manuscripts from confirmed conference participants will be considered. Any submission from authors who did not present at the conference will unfortunately need to be withdrawn from the Topic. The rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in higher education is reshaping teaching, assessment, and academic practices. While much attention has focused on the pedagogical applications of AI, less emphasis has been placed on faculty readiness, institutional governance, and the responsible integration of these technologies. Educators are increasingly expected to navigate complex challenges related to academic integrity, ethical use, and the design of AI-resilient learning environments. At the same time, institutions are under pressure to develop clear policies, support systems, and professional development frameworks that enable effective and responsible AI use. This Research Topic addresses a critical gap by focusing on how higher education institutions can build faculty capacity and establish governance structures to ensure ethical, transparent, and sustainable integration of AI in teaching and learning. The goal of this Research Topic is to advance understanding of how higher education institutions can support faculty readiness for AI integration while ensuring responsible, ethical, and academically rigorous practices. It seeks to address key challenges related to professional development, policy design, academic integrity, and institutional governance in AI-enabled learning environments. This collection aims to bring together empirical research, theoretical perspectives, and practice-based insights that examine how faculty develop the knowledge, skills, and critical awareness required to engage with AI effectively. It also explores how institutions can design frameworks that guide responsible use, mitigate risks related to misuse and over-reliance, and maintain the integrity of assessment and learning processes. Ultimately, the Research Topic aims to identify scalable models and strategies that support sustainable AI integration, strengthen academic standards, and enhance the quality of teaching and learning in higher education. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, systematic reviews, conceptual papers, case studies, and design-based research focusing on faculty readiness and responsible AI integration in higher education. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Faculty AI literacy and professional development• Institutional policies and governance frameworks for AI use• Academic integrity in AI-enabled assessment• Ethical considerations in AI adoption• Designing AI-resilient teaching and assessment strategies• Leadership and decision-making in AI integration• Student–faculty dynamics in AI-supported learning environments• Risk management, transparency, and accountability in AI use• Case studies of institutional implementation and best practicesSubmissions should demonstrate strong relevance to higher education practice, policy, and institutional strategy.
