Family Diversity and Socioemotional and Moral Development: Home Environments, Socialization Processes, and Family-Centered Interventions From Childhood to Adulthood

Research on emotional development has increasingly recognized the family as a crucial environment where individuals learn how to understand, express, and regulate emotions. Emotion socialization, which includes the sharing of knowledge about emotions, norms for expression, strategies for regulation, and values surrounding feelings, plays a key role in shaping relationships, social adjustment, and well-being. However, studies have often focused on relatively homogeneous family contexts, leaving important questions about how differences in structure, culture, and migration history impact emotional development throughout life. Empirical research shows that families facing socioeconomic challenges, migration experiences, minority cultural identities, or non-traditional household forms deal with unique emotional environments and socialization needs. Still, there are gaps in research regarding how these varied contexts shape emotional competencies, norms, and values across individuals, cultures, and generations. This Research Topic aims to enhance our understanding of how family diversity interacts with emotion socialization to affect emotional development from childhood to adulthood. It seeks to bring together insights from developmental psychology, cultural psychology, migration studies, family sociology, and affective science. The goal is to explore how structural and cultural differences shape the development of emotional competencies and practices. By comparing different family systems and cultural backgrounds, this topic encourages research that explores both culture-specific and overarching mechanisms of emotional learning. It also invites studies assessing interventions that support adaptive emotional development among children, adolescents, and adults, especially those living in diverse, non-normative social settings. To gather further insights into the influence of family diversity on emotional development, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Cultural and structural determinants of emotion socialization across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood- Emotion expression and regulation practices in socioeconomically, linguistically, or culturally diverse families- Acculturation, migration stress, and their impact on family emotion discourse and intergenerational affective transmission- Home learning environments and proximal mechanisms linking family diversity to emotional competencies- Measurement, adaptation, and validation of emotion-related constructs in diverse family contexts- Culturally sensitive and family-centered interventions for supporting emotional development- Cross-generational and cross-cultural comparisons of moral emotion socialization (e.g., shame, guilt, empathy) Topic editors: Yang Yang, Astrid Wirth Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84191/family-diversity-and-socioemotional-and-moral-development-home-environments-socialization-processes-and-family-centered-interventions-from-childhood-to-adulthood
