Fatty Acids and Their Metabolites: Future Drugs or Adjuvants for Inflammatory Diseases?
Fatty acids and their metabolites play crucial roles in various biological processes, with a significant impact on inflammation in the body. These compounds, including eicosanoids and HETEs, can either exacerbate or alleviate inflammatory responses, depending on their balance within the organism. In chronic inflammatory diseases, an imbalance in fatty acid profiles and their corresponding metabolites often occurs, raising questions about whether targeting these compounds could effectively reduce inflammation. Recent studies suggest that manipulating fatty acid pathways and metabolites may influence the immune system's response, potentially offering new avenues for treatment. This Research Topic aims to investigate the potential of fatty acids and their metabolites as either primary treatments or adjuvants in managing chronic inflammatory diseases. The focus is on understanding how these molecules interact with the immune system to modulate inflammatory processes. Both in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo studies are essential to explore these interactions comprehensively, aiming to identify specific mechanisms through which fatty acids and their metabolites can serve either as therapeutic agents or as supplements to enhance existing treatments. To gather further insights into this promising field, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Biochemical pathways of fatty acids and their metabolites in inflammation-Clinical trials testing the efficacy of fatty acid-based interventions in chronic diseases-The role of dietary fatty acids in the modulation of inflammation-Comparative analysis of fatty acid profiles in healthy vs. chronically inflamed tissues-Development of novel therapeutic strategies targeting fatty acid metabolites in inflammationThis Research Topic acknowledges the complexity of inflammatory pathways and seeks contributions that shed light on the intricate roles of fatty acids and their derivatives in chronic inflammation, aiming to clarify their potential as therapeutic options.
