Flowering Regulation and Other Environmental Adaptations in Pulse Crops

Responding to a rapidly changing environment is probably one of the main challenges for any species, including crop species. Understanding how plant species regulate their responses to environmental factors such as photoperiod, temperature, drought, and soil components is crucial for maintaining adequate plant production. Since flowering is a complex trait controlled by several signaling pathways influenced by environmental factors such as photoperiod and temperature, this trait will be the main focus of the Research Topic, but the regulation in response to other factors will also be considered.Genetic adaptation to agricultural environments is key to crop production. Crop yield is a highly complex trait influenced by multiple components. One key factor is flowering at the appropriate time, which is itself another complex trait controlled or influenced by day length, temperature, vernalization, and other factors. We expect the Topic to contribute to a better understanding of the signaling pathways triggered by these environmental factors and the genes involved. Identifying which of these genes have the most significant effect is crucial for designing better breeding programs and ensuring optimal yields in a changing environment. It is also very useful to know which germplasm is pre-adapted to specific environmental conditions. This Research Topic focuses on legume species cultivated primarily for their seeds. We welcome original contributions of a genetic, genomic, transcriptomic, or physiological nature that analyze the response of grain legume crops to abiotic environmental factors (photoperiod, drought, temperature, etc.). Contributions addressing how these factors affect flowering are preferred, but this is not mandatory. Evaluations of large germplasm collections, including omics data, under any of these factors, as well as data from close wild relatives, could also be considered. Review articles are welcome as well.
