Fluorine-Free Materials and Interfaces for Sustainable Sodium Batteries
Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a leading post-lithium technology for large-scale and cost-effective energy storage. However, most current SIBs still rely on fluorinated components, including PVDF binders, NaPF₆-based electrolytes, and fluorinated additives, which raise concerns related to processing safety, environmental impact, recyclability, and regulatory compliance.Recent advances in fluorine-free binders, non-fluorinated electrolytes, solid-state electrolytes, and interface engineering are creating new opportunities to develop safer and more sustainable sodium battery technologies. At the same time, progress in operando characterization, computational modeling, and data-driven materials discovery is accelerating the understanding and optimization of fluorine-free battery systems. This Research Topic aims to provide a dedicated forum for emerging research on fluorine-free sodium batteries, spanning materials design, interfacial science, sustainable manufacturing, and lifecycle considerations. By bringing together experimental, computational, and industrial perspectives, the collection seeks to advance high-performance, environmentally responsible, and scalable sodium-based energy storage technologies.Topics of interest include:— Fluorine-free binders, bio-derived polymers, and sustainable electrode manufacturing for sodium-ion batteries— Non-fluorinated electrolytes, including advanced salts, solvents, and additive chemistries for sodium-ion and sodium-metal batteries— Fluorine-free solid-state and quasi-solid-state electrolyte systems— Interfacial chemistry, interphase evolution, and interface engineering in fluorine-free battery environments— Advanced characterization, operando techniques, and mechanistic studies of fluorine-free sodium storage systems— Computational, data-driven, and machine-learning-assisted discovery of fluorine-free battery materials— Performance benchmarking and degradation analysis of fluorine-free versus conventional fluorinated battery systems— Scalable manufacturing, recycling, life-cycle assessment, and sustainability evaluation of fluorine-free sodium batteries Topic editors: Zhiming Liang, Xiaojun Liu Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82790/fluorine-free-materials-and-interfaces-for-sustainable-sodium-batteries
