Focus on Physical Activity and Healthy Aging Volume II

Physical activity and exercise science provide important opportunities to preserve functional capacity, support independence, and improve well-being in later life. However, substantial gaps remain in determining which forms, intensities, and delivery models of activity are most effective for people with frailty, chronic disease, cognitive vulnerability, or limited access to exercise facilities. Key questions also concern how interventions can be sustained beyond supervised programs, adapted to individual needs, and implemented across clinical, community, and home-based settings.Recent research shows that structured exercise can improve strength, balance, mobility, physical fitness, and quality of life, while potentially contributing to the prevention or management of frailty and falls. Evidence is also expanding on associations between physical activity, cognitive health, depression, resilience, and dementia risk. Wearable sensors, tele-exercise platforms, and other digital tools may support monitoring, personalization, and adherence, although their effectiveness, accessibility, and long-term use remain uncertain. Multimodal approaches that combine exercise with nutrition, psychosocial support, or disease management are promising, but their mechanisms and implementation require further evaluation. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how physical activity and structured exercise influence healthy aging through biological, functional, cognitive, and psychosocial pathways. It will address how interventions can be designed, personalized, evaluated, and implemented to maintain independence and improve quality of life, while also encouraging research that extends beyond established exercise recommendations. To gather further insights across clinical, community, home-based, and technology-enabled contexts, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Physical activity and exercise for frailty prevention, fall prevention, mobility, and maintenance of daily functioning• Exercise interventions for older adults living with chronic diseases or multimorbidity• Technology-enabled activity, including wearable sensors, tele-exercise, remote monitoring, and digital health applications• Personalization of exercise prescription according to functional status, preferences, risk profiles, and capability• Barriers and facilitators to physical activity initiation, adherence, and long-term maintenance• Implementation science and the translation of effective interventions into clinical and community practice• Effects of physical activity on cognitive function, dementia risk, depression, resilience, and mental well-being• Exercise-related changes in biological aging markers, including epigenetic clocks, senescence-associated secretory phenotype markers, and other organismal measures• Multimodal interventions integrating exercise with nutrition, psychosocial support, or chronic disease management• Equity, accessibility, and culturally responsive approaches to promoting physical activity in later lifeWe welcome Original Research, Clinical Trials, Reviews and Systematic Reviews, and Perspectives.
