From Beehive to Health: Exploring the Biological Activities and Biotechnological Applications of Propolis
Propolis, the remarkable substance produced by bees, emerges from their intricate interactions with the local flora, mixing their saliva with plant exudates, flowers, fruits, and pollen. Within the hive, propolis functions as an indispensable antiseptic agent, promoting the vitality of the bee colony. The diverse botanical origins of propolis have cultivated a range of types globally, each carrying a unique chemical composition dependent on its source. These compositions in turn dictate the biological activities of the propolis, with various studies identifying properties such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, healing, and immunostimulant. Despite the growing biotechnological advancements in utilizing propolis for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and dental purposes, a significant gap remains regarding robust clinical trials to thoroughly assess these applications. This Research Topic aims to delve deeper into the biological activities of propolis and explore the biotechnological potential of its derivatives in health. The goal is to enhance understanding through studies that evaluate propolis's biological activities or develop new pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and dental products based on it, emphasizing the importance of scientific validation and innovation in this domain. To gather further insights into the biological and technological perspectives of propolis, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Pharmacological studies focused on discovering the mechanisms of action of propolis's chemical constituents.• Investigations into the structure-activity relationship of bioactive molecules and their mechanisms in chronic non-communicable diseases.• Research on the relationship between biological activity and metabolic profiling, fingerprinting, and metabolomics.• Technological development and characterization studies of propolis-based pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and dental products.• Evaluation of the efficacy of propolis-composed products through pharmacological studies.• Clinical trials assessing the efficacy of propolis-containing products.• Comprehensive reviews on technological advancements in the development of propolis-based health products.Types of articles accepted include: Original Research, Methods, Review, Hypothesis & Theory, Mini Review, and Brief Research Reports.
