FROM CELL TO MAN: a tribute to Ranieri Cancedda's 60 years of research
Ranieri Cancedda's research in bioengineering and biotechnology has significantly advanced the understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms over the past six decades. Beginning in the early 1970s, Cancedda focused on understanding the proliferation and differentiation of cells, transitioning from stem cells to mature tissue cells. His pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for the application of this knowledge in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine by mid-career. Cancedda was among the pioneers in employing stem and progenitor cells, as well as in vitro reconstructed tissues, as therapeutic agents for repairing damaged epithelia and skeletal tissues. Despite significant advances, challenges remain in fully activating tissues' intrinsic potential for healing and regeneration. This Research Topic aims to honor Ranieri Cancedda by exploring the cellular and molecular mechanisms that govern cell proliferation and differentiation. It seeks to further understand the body's physiological responses to injuries caused by diseases, infections, malformations, and traumas. Another primary aim is to uncover innovative tissue engineering and regenerative medicine strategies to address various tissue defects and lesions. The foremost objective is to investigate reactivating the inherent healing capabilities of tissues and develop new therapies to enhance or restore these processes. To gather further insights in regenerative and tissue engineering sciences, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Cellular and molecular controls of cell proliferation and differentiation- Physiological responses to tissue injuries and the healing process- Innovative tissue engineering strategies and products- Application of stem and progenitor cells in regenerative therapies- Advances in tissue reconstruction and repair technologiesWe invite Original Research, Review, and Perspective articles aligned with these themes.
