From Clinical Cases to Advanced Diagnostic: Pathology in Pet Reptiles and Amphibians

Reptiles and amphibians are increasingly represented in companion animal practice, creating a growing demand for accurate and species-specific diagnostic approaches. However, the pathological characterization of diseases in these taxa remains limited compared to traditional domestic species, due to anatomical and physiological peculiarities, lack of reference data, and their historical underrepresentation in veterinary research. Recent advances in diagnostic imaging, histopathology, and ancillary techniques have improved the investigation of disease processes in these animals. At the same time, clinicians are encountering a broader spectrum of conditions, including neoplastic, infectious, metabolic, and husbandry-related disorders. In many cases, clinical reports represent the first source of information on emerging or poorly understood diseases. Integrating clinical findings with advanced diagnostics is essential to improve disease recognition, refine differential diagnoses, and support evidence-based clinical decision-making in reptile and amphibian medicine.
