From Formulation to Function: Vesicular Nanocarriers and Their Pharmacological Targets

Vesicular nanocarriers — including liposomes, niosomes, exosomes, ethosomes, and other lipid- or polymer-based bilayer systems — have emerged as versatile platforms for delivering small molecules and biopharmaceuticals to specific biological targets. Beyond their formulation and physicochemical characterization, understanding how these carriers interact with receptors, transporters, ion channels, and other cellular targets is essential to translating nanocarrier design into predictable pharmacological effect. This Research Topic focuses on the pharmacological mechanisms underlying vesicular nanocarrier–target interactions. We welcome original research, reviews, and methods articles addressing:Design and synthesis of vesicular nanocarriers with defined pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profilesMolecular mechanisms of drug-target binding and transduction mediated by nanocarrier-encapsulated agentsInteractions between nanocarrier-delivered compounds and receptors, enzymes, ion channels, transporters, or transcription factorsHigh-throughput screening and lead-finding approaches using vesicular delivery systemsPharmacokinetics, metabolism, and toxicology of investigational nanocarrier-based drugsPhysiological responses to nanocarrier-delivered therapeutics at the molecular, cellular, or organism levelStudies must provide precise chemical/physical characterization of the nanocarrier and cargo (e.g., particle size, encapsulation efficiency, drug purity via chromatography/mass spectrometry) and a mechanistic, target-focused analysis rather than a purely formulation-descriptive account. In line with the section’s scope, submissions based solely on crude extracts or multiherbal preparations, purely in silico modeling, or clinical/patient-outcome studies without an experimental pharmacology component fall outside this Research Topic.
