From Mathematics Education Research to Classroom Impact: Translating Findings into Effective Mathematics Teaching and Learning

Mathematics education research has generated substantial knowledge regarding effective teaching strategies, learner cognition, assessment practices, curriculum development, teacher professional learning, and technology-enhanced instruction. Nevertheless, a longstanding challenge remains in ensuring that research findings are effectively translated into classroom practice and lead to measurable improvements in learner outcomes. The research-practice gap continues to be a central concern within mathematics education, as many research-based innovations fail to move beyond academic publications into sustainable educational practice (Ahl et al., 2023; Schlicht Schmälzle et al., 2024).Recent scholarship has highlighted the importance of shifting attention from merely identifying effective teaching approaches to understanding how research findings are implemented, adapted, and sustained in real educational settings. Ahl et al. (2023), in their systematic mapping review of implementation research in mathematics education, found increasing global interest in examining how research-informed curriculum reforms, professional development initiatives, and instructional resources are enacted in practice. Their review demonstrates that implementation processes are critical to achieving meaningful educational change and should be regarded as an important area of inquiry in their own right. Similarly, Schlicht-Schmälzle et al. (2024) argue that research-practice partnerships provide promising mechanisms for bridging the persistent divide between educational research and classroom practice by fostering collaboration among researchers, teachers, school leaders, and policymakers. This Research Topic seeks to advance understanding of how mathematics education research can be transformed into actionable knowledge that improves teaching and learning. We invite contributions that investigate how researchers engage with teachers, schools, communities, and policymakers to mobilize and implement research findings in authentic educational contexts. The collection particularly welcomes studies demonstrating how evidence from mathematics education research has informed classroom instruction, curriculum innovation, assessment practices, teacher professional development, digital learning environments, and education policy. The Topic acknowledges growing calls for educational research to have demonstrable societal impact. Fitzgerald and Tipton (2023) argue that research should not assume automatic uptake by practitioners but should instead develop effective knowledge mobilization strategies that promote evidence-informed decision-making. Within mathematics education, this requires deliberate attention to how research findings are communicated, interpreted, and adapted for diverse educational settings. Particularly welcome are studies involving collaborative and participatory approaches, including action research, design-based research, lesson study, implementation research, professional learning communities, and research-practice partnerships. Emerging evidence suggests that when teachers actively participate in research processes, they are more likely to integrate evidence into instructional decision-making and sustain innovation in their classrooms (Cardona, 2023; da Ponte et al., 2023).Through bringing together international perspectives from both the Global North and Global South, this Research Topic aims to identify effective pathways through which mathematics education research can produce meaningful classroom impact. Ultimately, the collection seeks to showcase research that not only advances theoretical understanding but also contributes directly to improving mathematics teaching, learning, learner achievement, and educational equity across diverse contexts. This Research Topic welcomes theoretical, empirical, methodological, and systematic review studies that examine how mathematics education research is translated into practice and generates impact in teaching and learning.
