From Multi-Omics Biomarkers to Clinical Practice: Implementing Personalized Nutrition for NCD Prevention

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiometabolic disorders, type 2 diabetes, metabolic liver diseases, and certain cancers, remain major global health and economic challenges. Recent advances in multi-omics technologies, such as genomics, epigenomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, and metagenomics, have greatly improved our ability to characterize individual biological variability and understand personalized responses to diet. These methodologies, potentially combined with digital phenotyping tools such as continuous glucose monitoring, actigraphy, and other wearable devices, have paved the way for precision nutrition and continue to shape its future. Despite this progress, a substantial gap remains between the discovery of omics-based biomarkers and their translation into routine clinical and public health practice. This gap is largely due to challenges in standardization, validation, data integration, and the still limited evidence supporting their clinical and prognostic value. As a result, the implementation of omics-based biomarkers for NCD prevention remains limited. Current evidence highlights their potential for stratifying NCD risk and guiding personalized dietary interventions. However, key questions remain regarding their real-world efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. This Research Topic aims to address this translational gap by consolidating and advancing research on the development, validation, integration, and clinical implementation of multi-omics biomarkers for personalized nutrition in NCD prevention. By welcoming studies ranging from mechanistic investigations to clinical evaluations, the goal is to clarify which biomarkers are currently available, which are sufficiently robust for clinical deployment, which can reliably predict disease risk, and what standards are needed to ensure methodological rigor, reproducibility, and equitable health outcomes. Ultimately, this Research Topic aims to define how multi-omics biomarkers can be effectively incorporated into evidence-based dietary strategies for NCD prevention. The initiative seeks to foster cross-disciplinary collaboration and encourage submissions that tackle the complexity of moving precision nutrition from research settings into practical, scalable solutions with clinical relevance. To support the translation of multi-omics biomarkers into personalized nutrition strategies for NCD prevention, this Research Topic will welcome studies addressing their critical assessment, validation, clinical applicability, and integration into research, clinical, and public health settings. The scope includes, but is not limited to, the following themes:• Development and validation of multi-omics biomarkers for NCD risk assessment and dietary intervention across cellular, animal, in vitro, and in silico models, as well as clinical and real-world settings.• Integration of metabolomic, (epi)genomic, lipidomic, proteomic and microbiome data into dietary guidance and clinical decision-making.• Machine learning and digital health innovation in personalized nutrition.• Clinical trials, adaptive designs, and pragmatic evaluations of biomarker-guided dietary interventions.• Prospective observational studies evaluating associations between multi-omics biomarkers and health outcomes.• Implementation science, including workflow integration, health economics, and patient engagement strategies.• Methodological standards for reproducibility and data governance in multi-omics nutrition research.• Equity, ethics, and governance in the translation and deployment of multi-omics biomarkers in personalized nutrition. We encourage submissions in the form of Original Research, Systematic Reviews and/or Meta-analysis, Umbrella reviews, Mini Reviews, Methods, Brief Research Reports, and Opinions/Perspectives addressing implementation, ethics, regulation, or equity.
