From Population Nutrition Trends to Bedside Care: Nutritional Assessment and Support Across the Lifespan and in Chronic Disease
Clinical nutrition examines how nutritional status, metabolic disturbances and dietary factors influence health, disease development and clinical outcomes across the lifespan. Despite advances in nutritional screening, assessment tools and nutritional support, malnutrition, overweight and obesity remain prevalent in both community and healthcare settings. Important questions concern how nutritional risk can be identified earlier, how assessment methods can be adapted to different life stages and diseases, and how population nutrition trends can inform individualized clinical care. Recent studies have highlighted the value of nutritional biomarkers, validated indices, multidimensional screening approaches and personalized interventions in improving patient outcomes. However, variation in diagnostic criteria, limited integration of nutritional assessment into routine care and gaps in evidence for vulnerable populations continue to restrict effective implementation. Further investigation is needed to connect population level nutritional patterns with clinically relevant assessment, prevention and treatment strategies. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of nutritional status, metabolic and nutritional disturbances, and nutritional care from pregnancy and infancy through older adulthood. It will examine how nutritional assessment and screening can support the prevention and management of malnutrition, overweight, obesity and nutrition related non communicable diseases. Contributions may address the effectiveness, feasibility and clinical application of nutritional interventions and nutritional support in conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. The Research Topic also welcomes research evaluating nutritional biomarkers, nutritional indices and emerging methods for translating population nutrition evidence into individualized care.To gather further insights into clinically relevant nutritional assessment, prevention and support across the lifespan and in chronic disease, we welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Nutritional assessment and screening methods in clinical settings• Malnutrition, undernutrition and disease related wasting• Overweight, obesity and metabolic disturbances• Maternal and pregnancy nutrition with relevance to nutritional care• Infant, child and adolescent nutrition interventions• Nutrition in adults and older adults• Diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases with a strong connection to clinical nutrition• Nutrition related non communicable diseases• Nutritional interventions and nutritional support• Public health and population nutrition trends with implications for clinical practice• Nutritional biomarkers and nutritional indices• Prevention and management of nutrition related disorders• Development and clinical application of innovative nutritional care strategies• Personalized and precision approaches to clinical nutrition• Nutritional support design, delivery and evaluationStudies focused solely on epidemiology or genetics are outside the scope of this Research Topic. Research on specific medical conditions, breastfeeding or infant nutrition will be considered when it has a clear and substantial connection to clinical nutrition interventions, nutritional care or nutritional support.
