From Stress Signals to Cellular Resilience: Proteostasis and Intracellular Dynamics in Plant Abiotic Stress Adaptation

Plants continuously encounter environmental challenges such as drought, salinity, temperature extremes, and nutrient limitation. Because they are sessile organisms, their survival depends on the ability to rapidly sense these stresses and coordinate cellular responses. Central to these adaptive processes are mechanisms that maintain protein homeostasis, including protein folding, trafficking, modification, quality control, and degradation. At the same time, dynamic intracellular processes such as membrane trafficking, organelle communication, cytoskeletal remodeling, and protein complex assembly are increasingly recognized as critical regulators of abiotic stress adaptation. Stress perception and signal transduction, including crosstalk among key hormonal, calcium, redox, and other signaling pathways, provide an important link between environmental cues and these downstream cellular and molecular responses. Despite recent advances, many fundamental questions remain regarding how these processes are integrated to preserve cellular function and enhance stress resilience. This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for studies that advance our understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms linking stress signaling, protein homeostasis, and intracellular dynamics to plant abiotic stress adaptation. We seek contributions that uncover how plants perceive environmental challenges, transduce stress signals, and reorganize intracellular processes to maintain growth, development, and survival under adverse environmental conditions. We welcome original research, review, and methods articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Stress perception, signal transduction, and crosstalk among signaling pathways• Protein folding, quality control, and proteostasis networks• Protein trafficking and vesicle transport pathways• Endomembrane dynamics and organelle communication• Post-translational modifications in stress adaptation• Autophagy and protein degradation pathways• Emerging technologies for studying protein dynamics, signaling, and cellular processes• Cellular and intracellular mechanisms underlying abiotic stress toleranceThrough this collection, we aim to highlight emerging concepts, technologies, and discoveries that deepen our understanding of how stress signaling, protein homeostasis, and intracellular dynamics contribute to plant adaptation to abiotic stress and the development of stress-resilient crops.
