From the Mouth to the Brain: Exploring the Link Between Periodontitis/Peri-Implantitis and Neuroinflammation, Volume II
Inflammatory and immunological responses in oral tissues induced by microorganisms have drawn growing interest across medicine and dentistry. Scientific evidence shows that periodontal disease (PD) may be linked to a range of systemic disorders, including diabetes and insulin resistance, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory tract infections, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and, notably, neurological disorders. Some of the bacteria implicated in PD are also found in peri-implantitis (PI), and both conditions share similar immunoinflammatory responses in the host. While the microbial and mechanistic basis of oral–brain crosstalk is increasingly well characterized, several angles remain underrepresented. For example, peri-implantitis-specific neuroinflammatory pathways lag far behind periodontitis in the literature. Furthermore, clinical and translational evidence connecting oral disease to neurological outcomes remains limited relative to basic mechanistic and multi-omics work, and causal evidence linking periodontal/peri-implant disease to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease is still scarce compared to associative studies. This Research Topic aims to translate the microbial and mechanistic picture into clinical relevance. We prioritize observational and translational cohort studies that track patients with periodontitis or peri-implantitis for downstream neurological outcomes, as well as work that isolates peri-implantitis-specific pathways or validates biomarkers for the early detection of oral-driven neuroinflammation. We are equally interested in interventional research, including periodontal therapy and host-directed treatments assessed against measurable neurological endpoints, and in work that pushes Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease associations toward causal evidence. • Part I: Development and Maintenance of Periodontitis and Peri-implantitis (Review Articles).• Part II: Periodontitis and Peri-implantitis: Mechanisms of Neuroinflammation Induction (various study types, primarily experimental assays).• Part III: Periodontitis and Peri-implantitis: Novel Insights into Therapeutic Approaches. The first volume of this Research Topic can be found here: • From the Mouth to the Brain: Exploring the Link Between Periodontitis/Peri-Implantitis and Neuroinflammation Topic editors: Gestter Willian Lattari Tessarin, Dirk M.
