Frontiers in Inflammation Research - Mechanisms, Mediators and Biomarkers in the Onset and Resolution of Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is acknowledged as the fundamental cause of various pathological conditions, and in recent decades, there has been a growing focus on the physiological mechanisms leading to the resolution of the inflammatory response, with the aim of discovering novel therapeutic strategies. A shift in the profile of cytokines, lipid mediators, and other signaling molecules is typically observed during the transition from the acute inflammatory response to the resolution phase. The movement from inflammation to resolution is also marked by alterations in lipid mediators, including eicosanoids, the polarization and differentiation of immune cells, such as macrophages and lymphocytes, and the crosstalk between platelets and stromal and immune cells. A deeper understanding of the mechanisms governing the initiation and resolution of inflammation may facilitate the development of innovative approaches to treating diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, COPD, asthma, inflammatory bowel diseases, and cancer. The Research Topic will therefore focus on the following topics:- Lipid mediators and other signaling molecules in the onset and resolution of inflammation- Mechanisms of the onset and resolution of inflammation- Signal cascades that regulate inflammatory processes- Cellular plasticity in inflammatory processes- RNA – lipid signaling interactions- Biomarkers and surrogate markers in inflammatory diseases- Artificial Intelligence for diagnosis and treatmentsDr. Salo holds a patent on a class of COX-2 inhibitors/TRA antagonists.
