Frontiers in Supramolecular Chemistry: Current Perspectives and Future Directions and Applications
Frontiers in Chemistry are proud to present this collection of Mini Reviews and Perspectives entitled “Current Perspectives and Future Directions and Applications”. Supramolecular chemistry is a dynamic field that explores the complex structures formed via non-covalent interactions — including hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, van der Waals forces, metal coordination, and hydrophobic effects. In recent years, it has gained significant attention due to its potential applications across diverse areas such as targeted drug delivery, responsive materials science, catalysis, molecular sensing, and nanotechnology. Despite notable progress, the field is still evolving with ongoing debates and questions about the stability, predictability, and functionality of supramolecular structures under real-world conditions. This Research Topic aims to spotlight recent developments in supramolecular chemistry, fostering discussion and further inquiry within the community, while simultaneously bringing a spotlight onto novel applications of supramolecular chemistry for real-world application. This collection seeks to highlight both contemporary advancements and imaginative pathways for future research, with particular interest in — but not limited to — the following themes:Self-assembly strategies and the design principles governing the formation of well-defined architecturesHost-guest chemistry and its role in molecular recognition, encapsulation, and controlled releaseSupramolecular polymers and dynamic covalent materials with tunable mechanical or optical propertiesMechanically interlocked molecules, including rotaxanes, catenanes, and molecular machinesComputational and theoretical approaches to modelling non-covalent interactions and predicting supramolecular behaviourEmerging applications at the interface of supramolecular chemistry with biology, electronics, and environmental scienceExamples of the real-world application of supramolecular innovation. We welcome and embrace contributions that offer critical perspectives on the current state of the field as well as forward-looking analyses of where supramolecular chemistry is heading, and are looking forwards to providing a platform where all voices can be heard.
