Functional Biomaterial Interfaces for Biomedical Sensing, Regeneration, and Therapeutic Applications

Advances in functional biomaterial interfaces are creating new opportunities for biomedical applications that require controlled interactions with biological environments. In this context, engineered surfaces, bioactive coatings, polymeric and composite biomaterials, electroactive materials, and hybrid biointerfaces play a key role in improving biocompatibility, biological stability, antimicrobial response, sensing performance, and tissue-regenerative potential. The integration of materials science, surface engineering, microbiology, and in vitro biological evaluation is essential for designing biomaterial-based platforms with reliable performance under physiological or simulated biological conditions.Despite significant progress, important challenges remain in the translation of functional biomaterial interfaces toward biomedical use. Issues such as biofouling, poor long-term stability, limited biocompatibility, weak coating adhesion, inadequate antimicrobial response, insufficient bioactivity, and variable performance in biological media continue to restrict their practical application. In addition, the reproducible fabrication of functional coatings, polymeric composites, and hybrid biomaterial systems remains a critical requirement for ensuring consistent biological, therapeutic, and sensing-related performance.Recent developments in bioactive and antimicrobial coatings, nanostructured biomaterials, polymer-based composites, electroactive interfaces, and surface-functionalized materials offer promising strategies to address these limitations. These approaches are relevant not only for biomedical sensing and diagnostic platforms, but also for regenerative medicine, bone tissue engineering, localized therapeutic response, and biologically active implant surfaces. However, further work is needed to understand how material composition, surface chemistry, microstructure, degradation behavior, and biological interactions influence functional performance. Therefore, this Research Topic focuses on studies that connect biomaterial design, surface/interface engineering, sensing capability, regenerative potential, therapeutic response, microbiological behavior, and in vitro validation. The scope is centered on functional biomaterial interfaces, with particular interest in systems designed for biomedical sensing, tissue regeneration, antimicrobial activity, and therapeutic interaction with biological environments. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge studies on the design, fabrication, characterization, and biological evaluation of functional biomaterials, coatings, composites, and biointerfaces for biomedical applications.
