Functional Foods, Nutraceuticals, and Sustainable Dietary Innovations for Human Nutrition and Metabolic Health

Functional foods, nutraceuticals, and sustainable dietary innovations represent a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of nutrition science, metabolic health, and environmental sustainability. With the global rise of diet-related non-communicable diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome, there is an urgent need to identify holistic solutions that simultaneously advance human health and address ecological challenges. Recent research underscores the significant potential of bioactive food components, novel food products, and dietary patterns not only for disease prevention but also as adjuncts in disease management. However, despite promising mechanistic and clinical findings, considerable gaps persist regarding the translation of these innovations into effective, accessible, and equitable health solutions. Unresolved questions span efficacy, underlying biological mechanisms, optimization of dietary interventions for diverse populations, and how such strategies can be implemented sustainably and at scale. This Research Topic aims to advance comprehensive understanding of how functional foods, nutraceuticals, and sustainable dietary innovations contribute to the prevention and management of metabolic disorders across the human lifespan. It seeks to stimulate multidisciplinary investigations and critical reviews that address the mechanistic, clinical, public health, and regulatory dimensions of dietary innovations. Through this effort, we hope to foster new collaborations, inform clinical and policy frameworks, and highlight practical pathways to move novel food strategies from laboratory research to real-world impact.Submissions are invited that explore the development, evaluation, and application of functional foods and nutraceuticals in the context of metabolic health and nutritional sustainability. Studies must demonstrate relevance to human nutrition and/or metabolic health, and should engage meaningfully with questions of efficacy, mechanisms, delivery, population-level application, and sustainability. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Bioactive food compounds and their molecular mechanisms of actiono Clinical and population studies on functional foods for prevention and management of metabolic disorderso Innovations in sustainable food product design and dietary patterns with metabolic benefitso The role of gut microbiota, fermentation, and postbiotics in mediating health outcomeso Advances in food processing, formulation, and delivery systems to optimize bioavailability and adherenceo Public health, policy, and regulatory perspectives on the adoption of functional foods and dietary innovations Topic editors: SHIV KUMAR, Dr. Nishant Kumar, Vaishali Soni Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85067/functional-foods-nutraceuticals-and-sustainable-dietary-innovations-for-human-nutrition-and-metabolic-health
