Functional nanofibers in nanobiotechnology: Innovations for biomedical advancement
Nanobiotechnology stands at the forefront of transformative biomedical innovation, leveraging nanoscale materials to probe, diagnose, and treat complex biological systems. Among these, nanofibers have emerged as versatile and powerful biomaterials, defined by their high aspect ratio, controllable architecture, and ability to interact with cells and tissues at a molecular level. Recent work has seen rapid progress in their synthesis through techniques like electrospinning, self-assembly, and phase separation, resulting in nanofibers with enhanced bioactivity, functional surfaces, and precise delivery capabilities. However, outstanding challenges persist—such as optimization of functional properties, safety and regulatory evaluation, and the effective translation from laboratory materials to clinical solutions. There are also ongoing debates about standardized characterization and the long-term biological impact of nanofiber-based constructs in real-world biomedical scenarios. This Research Topic aims to bridge the latest advances in nanofiber science with cutting-edge biomedical applications, reinforcing the foundational role these materials play in the next generation of nanobiotechnological solutions. We seek to showcase multidisciplinary approaches that harness engineering, chemistry, life sciences, and materials science to design, fabricate, and evaluate functional nanofibers. Special attention will be given to advances that enable precise quantification, manipulation, and control over biological entities at the nanoscale—opening new pathways for diagnostics, regenerative medicine, and intelligent therapeutic strategies. This Research Topic will encompass original research and reviews focusing on nanofibers and their role within nanobiotechnology for biomedical innovation and application. The scope will not include studies unrelated to nanoscale biomaterials, such as those focusing solely on molecular mechanisms or nonbiomedical uses, in accordance with the section’s guidelines.
