Functional Nanomaterials and Interfaces for Biohybrid Systems

Biological systems achieve extraordinary functionality through hierarchical organization, dynamic interfaces, and precisely coordinated interactions across multiple length scales. These principles have inspired the development of functional nanomaterials and engineered interfaces that enable biohybrid systems with enhanced structural, physicochemical, and biological performance. Rather than simply mimicking natural materials, the field increasingly focuses on uncovering the mechanistic principles that govern biological-material interactions and translating them into generalizable engineering strategies.Recent advances in interface engineering, hierarchical integration, and nanoscale materials design have enabled increasingly sophisticated biohybrid systems capable of programmable sensing, adaptive regulation, catalytic activity, tissue integration, and therapeutic function. Despite these advances, significant challenges remain in establishing predictive design rules that connect nanoscale architecture, interfacial properties, and biological responses to system-level performance. Addressing these challenges requires a deeper mechanistic understanding of how material composition, hierarchical organization, and dynamic interfaces collectively regulate functionality. This Research Topic provides a dedicated forum for studies that advance the rational design, mechanistic understanding, and engineering of functional nanomaterials and interfaces for biohybrid systems. We particularly welcome contributions that establish design principles, elucidate biological-material interaction mechanisms, and demonstrate how interface engineering and hierarchical architectures can be leveraged to achieve predictable and enhanced performance. By emphasizing fundamental mechanisms and transferable design strategies, this collection aims to define a clearer conceptual framework for next-generation biohybrid materials and interfacial systems. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspectives covering topics including, but not limited to:• Rational design of functional nanomaterials guided by biological principles• Interface engineering for regulating biological-material interactions• Hierarchical architectures and multiscale integration in biohybrid systems• Mechanistic studies linking interfacial structure to biological or physicochemical function• Generalizable design rules for engineering high-performance biohybrid systems Topic editors: Enbo Zhu, Yan-Ruide Li, Leo Zeyang Liu, Yang Liu Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80551/functional-nanomaterials-and-interfaces-for-biohybrid-systems
