Functional Neuroimaging Frontiers: Bridging Minds, Methods and Medicine
Functional neuroimaging is a rapidly evolving field at the intersection of neuroscience, engineering, psychology, medicine, and data science. Advances in acquisition, image analysis, functional connectivity, network neuroscience, and computational modelling are expanding the capacity to characterize brain function across scales and contexts. However, important challenges remain in improving reproducibility, interpretability, generalizability, and clinical utility. Current research addresses how brain dynamics support cognition, affect, development, and aging, while also investigating how functional alterations contribute to neurological and psychiatric disorders. Recent studies have demonstrated the value of multimodal integration, machine learning, normative modelling, and large-scale datasets for identifying biologically meaningful patterns and improving prediction. Nevertheless, methodological heterogeneity, limited external validation, unclear mechanistic explanations, and barriers to implementation continue to constrain translation. Further investigation is needed to connect innovative methods with robust biological insight, clinically actionable biomarkers, effective interventions, and broader societal benefit. This Research Topic aims to advance functional neuroimaging as both a scientific tool for understanding brain mechanisms and a translational platform for improving health and medical care. It will examine how emerging acquisition and analytical approaches can enhance the measurement of brain function, clarify relationships between neural dynamics and behaviour, and support reliable prediction of clinical outcomes. Contributions may address questions concerning the reproducibility and interpretability of neuroimaging measures, the integration of multimodal data, and the ability of computational models to generalize across individuals, populations, and clinical settings. The Research Topic also seeks to identify opportunities and limitations in applying functional neuroimaging to precision psychiatry, neurology, rehabilitation, neuromodulation, and clinical decision-making.To gather further insights into emerging functional neuroimaging methods and their applications from basic neuroscience to medicine, this Research Topic will cover methodological, computational, mechanistic, and translational research while excluding work that lacks a clear connection to functional brain measures or their interpretation.
