Fungal Bioproducts for Health, Agriculture, and the Environment

Fungal biotechnology enables the discovery and production of valuable compounds, enzymes, materials, and biological agents for agricultural, medical, industrial, food, and environmental applications. The need for renewable and biodegradable alternatives is increasing in response to chemical pollution, antimicrobial resistance, waste accumulation, and resource depletion. Recent research has highlighted the potential of fungal bioproducts as biopesticides, biofertilizers, antimicrobials, mycorrhizal inoculants, enzymes, biomaterials, and bioremediation tools. However, challenges remain in improving production yields, standardizing extraction and formulation, validating safety and efficacy, and translating laboratory findings into scalable applications. Further research is needed to support the sustainable development and wider adoption of fungal bioproducts. This Research Topic aims to advance the discovery, characterization, production, and application of beneficial fungal bioproducts as sustainable alternatives to conventional materials and processes. It will explore their potential to improve agricultural productivity, support human and animal health, enable industrial innovation, reduce waste and pollution, and contribute to circular bioeconomies. To gather further insights into fungal bioproducts for agricultural, biomedical, industrial, food, and environmental applications, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Fungal biopesticides, biofertilizers, and mycorrhizal inoculantso Antifungal, antimicrobial, and other bioactive compoundso Fungal enzymes, metabolites, food ingredients, and feed productso Myco-materials, biomaterials, and sustainable alternatives to synthetic productso Detoxification and bioremediation of wastes, toxins, and heavy metalso Cultivation, fermentation, extraction, formulation, and scale-upo Mechanistic, toxicological, biosafety, regulatory, and life-cycle assessmentsWe welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Methods, Perspective, and Brief Research Report articles.
