Fungal Ecology in a Warming World: Current Challenges and Future Perspectives

In a world shaped by climate change, biodiversity faces unprecedented challenges. Fungi, as a kingdom, are expected to shift their interactions with other species, though the ultimate outcome remains uncertain. Among these, fungal-vertebrate interactions are particularly critical due to their profound impact on animal populations. However, these are not the only shifts occurring; how will fungi adapt in their role as decomposers? How will rising temperatures influence their essential functions within the ecosystem? These are two essential questions, among many others, that require attention. The central objective of this proposal is to determine how fungal ecology will shift in a changing climate. To address this fundamental question, the research is organized into two primary sections: 1) The effects of climate change on fungi as decomposers, and 2) The impact of climate change on fungal-vertebrate interactions. The scope of this Research Topic spans fundamental and applied themes in fungal ecology, since they as decomposers to their interactions with vertebrates. It is welcome contributions addressing the following areas:Fungi as decomposer in temperate climates.Fungi as decomposer in tropical climates.
