Generative AI in Education: Contributions to Curriculum Design, Teaching Practice and Learning Assessment
The rapid advancement of generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is reshaping educational processes by changing how knowledge is created, taught and assessed. As educators increasingly use AI-powered tools, including large language models, intelligent tutoring systems, and content generation platforms to assist them with pedagogical content creation, lesson planning and academic assessment, these tools open new opportunities for curriculum design, teaching practice and learning assessment. However, understanding the critical challenges and taking advantage of the potential of these tools for educational practices can often be limited by educators’ and students’ low levels of AI literacy. While teachers still often lack the professional development and institutional guidance to assist them in using GenAI tools in their professional practice, low levels of AI literacy can lead to AI misuse and to detrimental effects in students, on their critical thinking skills and multiple forms of academic dishonesty. In this light, this Research Topic will seek to understand how the integration of GenAI is transforming educational processes, with a special focus on efforts seeking to support the ethical, purposive and effective use of these tools in curriculum design, creation and adoption of innovative teaching practices, and rigorous assessment of AI literacy levels and learning outcomes. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how GenAI can be effectively and responsibly integrated into educational practice. It seeks to understand how GenAI is (or can be used to) transform the curricula, teaching practices and learning assessment. It aims to identify evidence-based approaches while also examining the broader educational consequences of AI integration for learners, educators, and institutions. Considering its relevance, but also the challenges it can pose to teaching and learning practices, a particular focus is placed on the development of AI literacy, exploring how learners and educators can acquire the knowledge, skills, and critical awareness needed to engage with AI technologies ethically and effectively. As such, this Research Topic welcomes contributions focusing on how the integration of GenAI tools in institutions can be used to achieve curricular and pedagogical innovation, as well as research examining the role of these technologies in academic assessment. Novel frameworks, models and strategies to promote AI literacy, the integration of GenAI, and the transformation of educational and assessment practices will be especially welcomed. By bringing together multidisciplinary perspectives, this collection aims to support research, policy, and educational practice that promote the effective and critical use of GenAI while advancing understanding of its transformative implications for education. This Research Topic welcomes contributions that examine the development of AI literacy and the integration of generative AI in educational contexts, particularly the transformation of educational processes, and the implications for curriculum design, teaching practice, and learning assessment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Using GenAI to improve curriculum design and teaching strategies;• Perspectives on, and consequences of, personalized and adaptive learning supported by GenAI;• Human-AI collaboration in learning environments; • Changing roles of teachers and learners in AI-enhanced education;• AI literacy frameworks, competencies, and assessment;• Assessment practices and academic integrity in the age of GenAI;• Educational consequences of GenAI use;• Transformation of educational practice in the age of GenAI.We welcome original research articles, systematic and scoping reviews, theoretical and conceptual papers, methodological studies, case studies, brief research reports, and perspectives that advance knowledge and practice in the field of AI in education.
