Generative Artificial Intelligence-Enhanced Symbiotic Development of Cognition and Emotion in Education: New Perspectives from Neuroscience

Traditional educational models often treat cognition and emotion as separate domains, overlooking their deeply interconnected relationship. Advances in neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience have shown that this symbiosis arises from dynamic interactions within corticolimbic circuits, principally involving executive functioning (prefrontal cortex), emotional regulation (amygdala), and working memory (hippocampus). Recently, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), with its capabilities in generating personalized content, can reshape intertwined processes of cognitive and emotional learning. By leveraging neuroscience methodologies like EEG, fNRI and neurofeedback, GenAI can establish real-time feedback loops using physiological markers (e.g., amygdala reactivity) to reinforce cognition-emotion development. This Research Topic aims to emphasize the neurocognitive basis of learning and serve as a platform for exploring how GenAI, integrated with neuroscience methodologies (e.g., EEG/fNRI connectivity mapping, neurofeedback), can enhance cognition–emotion symbiosis in education. It seeks to drive cross-disciplinary research, optimizing neuroscience-based education core processes, such as executive functioning, emotional regulation, and working memory. We welcome the submissions grounded in neuropsychological and cognitive neuroscience perspectives that elucidate how GenAI enhances cognition–emotion symbiosis. Contributions must explicitly address core neuropsychological processes and integrate neuroscience methodologies. Suitable themes include (but not limited to):1) Pedagogical theories and models grounded in neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, supporting GenAI-facilitated cognition–emotion symbiosis;2) Systematic reviews and meta-analyses of GenAI applications in learners’ cognition and emotion development;3) Instructional and assessment strategies integrating neuroscience methodologies with GenAI for balanced cognitive-emotional development;4) AI agents and extended reality (XR) technologies for enhancing neuroadaptive learning through cognition–emotion symbiosis;5) Empirical studies on GenAI’s impact on emotion-cognition symbiosis;6) Ethical considerations, biases, and challenges in AI-driven neuropsychological and cognitive neuroscience models.
