Genetic and Epigenetic Biomarkers in Skin Aging and Longevity: Towards Precision Dermatology

Skin aging is driven by a complex interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, with genetic variation recognized as a principal determinant accounting for up to 60% of individual variability. The burgeoning field of genomic medicine, supported by multi-omics and advances in in-vitro modeling, has propelled the promise of precision dermatology. By understanding the molecular underpinnings and biological pathways identified through GWAS and transcriptomic profiling, we can shift from generic treatments to personalized interventions tailored to an individual’s unique genetic landscape. The quest for anti-aging in dermatology is expanding beyond mitigating visible signs toward a proactive manipulation of the biological processes governing longevity. This paradigm shift emphasizes science-driven strategies to restore skin integrity at a cellular level, moving from reactive aesthetic treatments to targeted interventions that maintain skin vitality. As both a protective barrier and a visible marker of systemic aging, the skin occupies a strategic position in the study of human longevity and systemic health. The objective of this Research Topic is to bridge the gap between aesthetic dermatology and longevity-focused medicine by integrating molecular, clinical, and translational perspectives. Advances in senolytics, epigenetic reprogramming, mitochondrial biology, and microbiome modulation have opened new possibilities for targeting the biological drivers of aging rather than just its symptoms. Ultimately, this collection aims to redefine dermatological care as a pillar of healthy aging, promoting strategies that prolong both the appearance and the functional longevity of the skin.We welcome contributions that advance the understanding of aging and longevity in dermatology, specifically focusing on the following themes:- Intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms: Cellular senescence, inflammation, oxidative stress, and epigenetic regulation.- Biomarkers and diagnostics: Early detection of aging trajectories and markers of systemic aging.- The skin microbiome: Its role in skin health, resilience, and the aging process.- Diversity in research: The impact of ethnicity, environment, and lifestyle on skin longevity.- Innovative therapeutics: Regenerative medicine, senolytics, stem cell therapy, and mitochondrial biology.- Translational approaches: New methods for skin aging assessment and personalized dermatological interventions.Innovative therapeutic strategies—such as regenerative medicine, senolytics, cosmetic and medical dermatological interventions and approaches to skin aging assessment—are encouraged. This Research Topic accepts original research articles, systematic and narrative reviews, meta-analyses, brief research reports, clinical studies, translational research, and well-documented case series that contribute to advancing the understanding of aging and longevity in dermatology.
