Genetic Data Sharing for Precision Medicine in the Era of Genomic Medicine

The field of genetic data sharing stands at the frontier of biomedical research and clinical innovation, with growing relevance to population health, screening, clinical diagnostics, and precision medicine. As biobanks expand and the adoption of genome sequencing accelerates, the secure exchange of genetic data—supported by advanced digital infrastructures and novel analytical approaches—has become crucial for maximizing the potential of large-scale, diverse datasets. However, this progress raises challenges around data security, ethical oversight, evolving consent mechanisms, stakeholder engagement, and analysis of genomic information. While data sharing is recognized for its foundational role in unraveling variant pathogenicity, powering genotype-phenotype correlations, and driving variant reclassification workflows, there are ongoing debates regarding privacy, data ownership, and equitable benefit sharing. Recent studies highlight innovations in dynamic consent and emerging technologies such as encryption and blockchain, yet large-scale adoption of secure and ethical data-sharing models remains limited. There is a pressing need for interdisciplinary perspectives and practical solutions to address the complexities of current genetic data-sharing ecosystems. This Research Topic aims to synthesize cutting-edge insights and provide actionable frameworks for optimizing genetic data sharing, with a sharp focus on dynamic consent and security technologies. We seek to examine the pathways by which genetic data can be leveraged with robust clinical, ethical, and social safeguards, while addressing legal and technological barriers to implementation. Special attention will be placed on analyzing the impact of data sharing on clinical variant interpretation, stakeholder experiences, and sustained patient engagement, as well as the implications of technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), data encryption, blockchain, and monetization for the future of genomic medicine. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses comprehensive evaluations of genetic data sharing practices, emphasizing the intersection of technical innovation, policy development, and stakeholder needs, while acknowledging the challenges in cross-jurisdictional regulation and interoperability. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Role of genetic data sharing in variant pathogenicity determination and genotype-phenotype mapping• Implementation and evaluation of dynamic consent models in clinical and research settings• Security, privacy, and ethical issues of genomic data storage, sharing, AI-based analysis, and monetization• Technological advances in data encryption, blockchain, and interoperability for genetic data• Stakeholder experiences (patients, clinicians, biobanks, policy makers) and interdisciplinary collaboration• Research aimed at precision medicine implementation and education, as well as optimization of ongoing patient engagement in genetic data sharing• Legal and regulatory frameworks for cross-border data sharing and liability• Actionable recommendations for biobanks, clinical labs, (newborn) screening, patient communities, and researchers• Ethical and societal impact of personalized medicine data sharing and results communication with patients.Article types welcomed for this Research Topic include Case Report, Review, Original Research, Clinical Trial, Method, Technology and Code, and Commentary articles.
