Genetic Frontiers in Bird Conservation: Innovations and Applications for Global Bird Populations
The proposal explores the cutting-edge applications of genetic technologies in bird conservation. This Research Topic aims to address critical conservation challenges faced by bird populations globally through the lens of genetic science. Importantly, it seeks to present evidence of successful programmes and lessons learnt from challenging situations. This is a major contribution to the 'Global Biodiversity Framework', Target 4, which includes: '…maintain and restore the genetic diversity within and between populations of native, wild and domesticated species to maintain their adaptive potential…’.The study will focus on three main areas:1. Genetic Mapping and Biodiversity Conservation: Utilizing advanced genetic sequencing technologies, the research will develop comprehensive genetic maps for endangered and threatened bird species. The aim is to understand the genetic diversity within and between populations, identifying genetic markers that are crucial for survival and adaptability to changing environments.2. Management of Invasive Bird Species: By examining the genetic makeup of invasive bird species, such as the Eurasian Collared Dove, the research intends to uncover patterns of invasion and expansion. Insights from these findings will guide the development of targeted management strategies that aim to mitigate the impact of invasive species on native bird populations and ecosystems.3. Restoration Genetics in Avian Populations: This aspect of the study will focus on applying genetic insights to restore and enhance the resilience of bird populations that have been fragmented or diminished. Techniques such as genetic rescue, assisted gene flow, and other genetic enhancement strategies will be considered to strengthen population viability under ongoing ecological pressures.By synthesizing the expertise of the researchers across different ecological zones — from the island habitats of Mexico to the diverse ecosystems of Brazil and the regulated environments in France — this study not only aims to contribute to the theoretical framework of conservation genetics but also to implement successful programmes and practical strategies that can be replicated globally. This research initiative promises to contribute significantly to the field of bird conservation, offering new perspectives and solutions grounded in genetic science, and providing a template for conservation efforts worldwide.
