Genomic and Transcriptomic Advances in Fungal Research

Fungi occupy a critical position in global ecosystems, human health, and food production, yet our molecular understanding of their biology has historically lagged behind that of other organisms. Recent advances in genomic and transcriptomic technologies are now transforming this landscape, offering unprecedented resolution into fungal gene expression, development, adaptation, and host interactions. This Research Topic brings together cutting-edge studies harnessing next-generation sequencing, comparative genomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics to illuminate the molecular biology of both model and non-model fungal species. Topics of interest span the full breadth of fungal research; from fruiting body development and light-regulated gene expression to defence mechanisms against bacterial pathogens and the discovery of novel fungal genomes.Published articles in this collection include investigations into the transcriptomic responses of Pleurotus ostreatus, Agaricus bisporus, and Lentinula edodes to Pseudomonas tolaasii-induced browning, shedding light on shared and species-specific immune strategies. Proteomic analyses of Hericium erinaceus mycelium reveal how different light spectra reshape protein expression profiles, with implications for cultivation optimisation. Additionally, the first genome report of Oudemansiella apalosarca is presented alongside comparative transcriptomic data on fruiting body formation under varying light conditions, providing a new genomic resource for the field. We welcome submissions covering, but not limited to:o Whole-genome sequencing and annotation of fungal specieso Transcriptomic and proteomic studies of fungal development and morphogenesiso Fungal responses to abiotic stressors (light, temperature, nutrients)o Host–pathogen interactions at the molecular levelo Comparative genomics across fungal taxao Functional genomics and gene regulatory networks in fungi This collection will serve as a valuable resource for mycologists, genomicists, and researchers working at the intersection of fungal biology and molecular medicine.
