Genomic Innovations for Resilient Livestock

Livestock genomics offers opportunities to strengthen animal production amid climate change, disease pressure, and diverse environmental conditions. A central challenge is balancing productivity with resilience while conserving the animal genetic resources that underpin locally adapted production systems. Genomic and other omics tools are expanding the ability to characterize genetic diversity, identify traits associated with adaptation and health, and inform selection. However, research and applications remain uneven across species, breeds, and countries, and genomic resources may underrepresent locally adapted populations. Further investigation is needed to understand how genetic diversity, breeding strategies, and production environments interact, and how to translate discoveries into practical, inclusive approaches that support sustainable food systems. This Research Topic aims to examine how genomic information and related technologies can contribute to resilient, productive, and sustainable livestock systems globally. It will bring together research on genetic diversity, adaptive and production traits, breeding approaches, and applying genomic insights to animal health and environmental challenges. Contributions may also consider how research and breeding programs can support food security and responsible production in line with SDGs 2 and 12.To gather further insights into genomic approaches for livestock resilience in production systems, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Genomic selection and breeding strategies for productivity and resilience• Genomic characterization and conservation of livestock animal genetic resources• Genetic and genomic bases of adaptation to heat, drought, and other environmental stressors• Genetic resistance and tolerance to infectious and parasitic diseases• Applications of genomics, transcriptomics, and other omics technologies in livestock research• Integration of genomic information with phenotypic, environmental, and production data• Community-based, collaborative, and sustainable breeding programs• Translation of genomic research into improved food security and responsible livestock production• Genetic diversity, population structure, and the history of livestock breeds Topic editors: Hinayah Rojas De Oliveira, Vinicius Silva Junqueira Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/87536/genomic-innovations-for-resilient-livestock
