Genomics for Sustainable, Climate-Resilient Livestock: Integrating Pangenomes, Multi-Omics, and Conservation
Recent advancements in livestock genomics have transitioned from reliance on single reference genomes toward the development of pangenomes and integrated multi-omics frameworks. The entire range of structural variations, uncommon alleles, and population specific regulatory mechanisms are frequently missed by traditional marker-based investigations, despite the fact that they have offered a baseline. This missing variation is essential for comprehending the genetic architecture of complex traits, especially in native and underutilized breeds that are important biodiversity reservoirs. Deciphering the genetic underpinning of resilience and adaptability is crucial as animal agriculture faces unprecedented strain from climate change and expanding production systems. Characterizing these genetic resources at a systems level is no longer just a biological interest—it is a necessity for global food security and sustainable livestock management. This Research Topic’s main goal is to bridge the gap between the actual implementation of climate-resilient livestock systems and high-resolution genomic technology. Translating multi-omic layers, such as genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics and metagenomics, into practical breeding strategies is still a major difficulty despite the abundance of sequencing data. By demonstrating how pangenomic techniques may detect distinct signals of selection and environmental adaptation, we want to address the issue of genomic degradation in the locally adapted breeds of livestock. This collection aims to clarify genotype-environmental interactions (GXE) and offers a guide for genomics-enabled livestock breeding that puts animal comfort and productivity first in the face of environmental stressors by combining various omics data.We invite high-quality research submissions that employ advanced genomic and multi-omics approaches to enhance resilience, adaptation, and conservation across diverse livestock species, including but not limited to cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, and camelids. Specific themes of interest include:• Pangenome Construction: Development and application of graph-based references to capture structural variants. • Systems Biology: Integration of transcriptomics, epigenomics, and metagenomics to understand complex phenotypes. • Resilience & Adaptation: Genomic insights into heat tolerance, disease resistance, and water-stress adaptation. • Conservation Genomics: Prioritization of indigenous breeds and characterization of genetic diversity. • Breeding for Sustainability: Development of genomic estimates of breeding value (GEBV) for climate-resilient traits. Original research work, reviews, mini-reviews, methods, and perspective articles that offer important analytical advancements or new biological insights are all appreciated and welcomed in this special edition.
