Geohazards and Risk Assessment under Extreme Environmental Conditions

Geohazards, including landslides, debris flows, rockfalls, ground subsidence, mine failures, underground collapses, and geotechnical instabilities, pose increasing threats to human life, infrastructure, resource development, and environmental sustainability. Under the influence of extreme environmental conditions such as intense rainfall, typhoons, earthquakes, climate change, mining activities, underground excavation, and urban expansion, the occurrence frequency, intensity, and cascading effects of geohazards have become increasingly significant worldwide. These hazards affect not only mountainous regions and transportation corridors, but also mining areas, underground spaces, tunnels, foundations, dams, and urban infrastructure systems. Despite advances in field monitoring, laboratory testing, numerical modelling, and remote sensing, major challenges remain in understanding complex triggering mechanisms, multi-factor coupling processes, uncertainty propagation, and dynamic risk evolution across different geological and engineering settings. This Research Topic aims to provide an interdisciplinary platform for recent advances in geohazard mechanisms, hazard assessment, monitoring, risk analysis, and mitigation under extreme environmental conditions. Particular attention will be given to geohazards related to slopes, mining engineering, underground spaces, tunnels, foundations, rock engineering, and critical infrastructure systems. Contributions that integrate field investigation, laboratory testing, geophysical exploration, remote sensing, numerical simulation, probabilistic methods, machine learning, and engineering practice are especially encouraged. The collection also seeks to improve understanding of how climate change, extreme weather, earthquakes, excavation, mining, and human activities may influence the occurrence and evolution of geohazards. We welcome original research articles, reviews, case studies, technical papers, and perspective articles related to geohazards and risk assessment.
