Geophysical Imaging in Volcanic and Seismic Environments: Data Analysis, Source Inversion and Numerical Modelling
Volcanic and seismically active environments constitute some of the most complex natural laboratories in solid Earth geophysics. The Research Topic aims to advance the state of the art in geophysical imaging of such environments, with a particular focus on innovative approaches to data analysis, source inversion, and both analytical and numerical modelling. Understanding the internal structure and dynamic processes of volcanoes and seismogenic zones is essential for improving hazard assessment and mitigating geological risks. We invite contributions that develop and apply advanced methodologies for extracting physical information from multi-parameter geophysical datasets. These include seismic data (both passive and active), gravity and magnetic measurements, as well as ground deformation observations derived from GNSS and satellite-based DInSAR techniques. Particular emphasis is placed on integrated approaches that combine complementary datasets to enhance resolution and reduce uncertainties in subsurface imaging.Relevant topics include, but are not limited to: signal processing and noise reduction in complex environments; inversion techniques for imaging velocity, density, and magnetic susceptibility structures; time-dependent (4D) monitoring of subsurface changes; and joint or cooperative inversion frameworks. Contributions addressing both deterministic and probabilistic inversion schemes are encouraged. The Research Topic also welcomes studies on forward modelling, including analytical solutions and high-performance numerical simulations, aimed at reproducing geophysical observations under complex geological conditions. These models are essential for linking observations to physical processes such as magma migration, fault mechanics, and fluid circulation.Framed within the solid Earth geophysics community, this Special Issue focuses on studies exploring the interplay between observation, inversion, and simulation. We welcome submissions addressing, among others, the following themes:• Observational data analysis and signal processing in volcanic and seismic environments;• Tomographic and structural imaging of crustal and volcanic systems;• Analytical and numerical inversion methods;• Multiphysics numerical modelling;• Integration of seismic, geodetic, and potential field data;• Machine learning-assisted detection, inversion, and model emulation.Article Types: Original Research, Methods, Review, Mini-Review, Perspective, and Data Reports presenting openly available datasets with geophysical analysis.
