Geospatial Approaches for Water Resource Assessment in a Changing Climate

Water resources play a pivotal role in sustaining ecosystems, supporting socioeconomic development, and ensuring environmental security. However, they are under increasing pressure from climate change, rapid urbanization, land-use and land-cover changes, population growth, and extreme hydrological events. Variations in precipitation patterns, floods, droughts, and declining water quality have created complex challenges for sustainable water resources management. Traditional methods often fail to capture the spatial and temporal variability of hydrological processes, limiting their capacity to inform effective policy and decision-making. Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have emerged as essential tools for monitoring, analysing, and managing water resources. The integration of these geospatial technologies with hydrological modelling, climate analysis, and decision-support frameworks offers new opportunities to observe dynamic water systems, assess environmental change, and enhance climate resilience across diverse spatial and temporal scales. This Research Topic aims to bring together recent advancements in Remote Sensing and GIS that support integrated water resources assessment, water quality monitoring, hydrological modelling, climate change impact assessment, flood and drought analysis, and sustainable watershed management. The objective is to highlight innovative geospatial approaches that contribute to improved understanding, planning, and management of water resources under changing environmental conditions. Contributions are expected to promote the development of analytical frameworks, predictive models, and data-driven strategies that inform sustainable water management, strengthen climate adaptation capabilities, and enhance water security. Special emphasis will be placed on studies demonstrating the role of RS/GIS technologies in developing robust decision-support systems and interdisciplinary methods at the interface of hydrology, environmental science, and climate research. To gather further insights into the geospatial dimensions of sustainable water management, this Research Topic welcomes a wide range of contributions-from methodological innovations to applied studies-exploring how Remote Sensing and GIS can drive progress toward water security and climate resilience. Submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following areas are encouraged:• Integrated water resources assessment and modelling• Surface and groundwater monitoring and mapping• Water quality analysis and watershed characterization• Climate change impact assessment and adaptation strategies• Flood and drought risk analysis and prediction• Land-use and land-cover change detection and its hydrological implications• Data-driven and AI-supported geospatial modelling for water management• Decision-support systems for sustainable and climate-resilient water system• Ecosystem-based approaches to water and watershed sustainabilityThe Research Topic welcomes Original Research Articles, Review Articles, Methods Articles, and Perspective Articles that present novel applications of geospatial technologies, satellite data analysis, GIS-based modelling, artificial intelligence, and interdisciplinary approaches in water science. Studies integrating environmental monitoring, climate risk assessment, and disaster resilience frameworks are particularly encouraged. Together, these contributions will advance the application of Remote Sensing and GIS toward sustainable and climate-resilient water resource management.
