Geospatial Solutions for Efficient Water use and Ecosystem Resilience in Agriculture
Agriculture is heavily reliant on water resources, which are increasingly threatened by global challenges such as population growth and climate change. These pressures demand innovative solutions to ensure both food security and ecosystem health. To this end, geospatial technologies—including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), satellite monitoring, and spatial analysis—have emerged as pivotal tools in addressing these issues. These technologies provide the precision needed for an in-depth understanding of the complex water–agriculture nexus, enabling informed decisions that enhance water-use efficiency in agriculture while maintaining vital water reserves and ecosystem resilience. This Research Topic aims to develop and implement an advanced geospatial framework to optimize water utilization in agricultural systems, thereby achieving two key goals: strengthened ecosystem resilience and sustainable food production. By leveraging Earth observation data, IoT sensor networks, and spatial analytics, this initiative seeks to establish precise and scalable models for assessing agricultural water needs, identifying inefficiencies, and guiding targeted interventions such as precision irrigation and soil conservation practices. The overarching objective is to transform agricultural water management into a process guided by data, adaptability, and fairness—safeguarding hydrological systems while supporting long-term food and water security. In exploring the scope of this Research Topic, we aim to integrate geospatial technologies—including remote sensing, GIS, IoT, and predictive analytics—into the dynamic agriculture–water interface. Studies that address water resources, hydrology, drought monitoring, and broader water-related environmental processes fit naturally within the remit of Earth Science, while contributions that primarily focus on agricultural systems, crop processes, and farm-level water use are best aligned with Environmental Science. The scope includes, but is not limited to, the following themes:• Sustainable groundwater management• Drought monitoring and mitigation• Precision irrigation techniques• Policy-enabled spatial decision support systems• Interdisciplinary approaches bridging environmental science, technology, and socioeconomic factorsWe encourage submissions of original research, case studies, and reviews that demonstrate scalable and data-driven approaches for improving the resilience and water efficiency of food production systems. Manuscripts should be unpublished, well-structured, and supported by strong methodological validation. Submissions will undergo a rigorous peer-review process and must adhere to established ethical standards. Interdisciplinary work linking environmental science, technology, and socioeconomic dimensions is particularly welcome.
