Geotechnical Engineering and Geohazard Mitigation under Adverse Geological Conditions

This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volumes can be found here: Evolution Mechanism and Prevention Technology of Karst Geological Engineering Disasters Geotechnical engineering plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, durability, and sustainability of civil infrastructure, particularly in regions characterized by challenging geological conditions such as karst landscapes, fault zones, heterogeneous soil-rock mixtures, and deep-seated rock masses. However, these environments often present extreme uncertainties and complex interactions that threaten the integrity and longevity of engineering structures like tunnels, slopes, and foundations. Recent studies have revealed that existing design methodologies and prediction models often fail to capture the multifaceted behaviors of geological materials and processes under stress, leading to geohazards such as landslides, collapses, and subsidence. Digital transformation, driven by big data and artificial intelligence, is rapidly reshaping how geotechnical problems are studied and managed. Despite these advances, significant knowledge gaps remain in linking geological characteristics with engineering performance under adverse conditions and in developing predictive frameworks that integrate real-time monitoring, machine learning, and hazard mechanism modeling. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding and mitigation of geotechnical challenges in adverse geological conditions through interdisciplinary collaboration and technological innovation. It seeks to bridge the divide between fundamental geological research and applied geotechnical engineering by promoting mechanistic studies, computational modeling, and digital intelligence tools. The goal is to develop comprehensive frameworks for predicting and controlling geohazards, improve resilience throughout the infrastructure lifecycle, and enable smart, data-informed decision-making in complex environments. Key objectives include refining theoretical and numerical models for special soil and rock masses, enhancing early warning systems, and advancing sustainable solutions that combine engineering design with environmental adaptability. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses theoretical, experimental, and applied studies that address geotechnical safety and performance in challenging geological contexts. It is limited to works that contribute new insights into the interaction between geological complexities and engineered systems. To gather further insights into the mechanisms and technologies for geohazard mitigation, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Advanced geophysical and geological characterization techniques for complex terrains;• Mechanical behavior, constitutive modeling, and laboratory analysis of heterogeneous soil and rock masses;• Analytical, experimental, and numerical approaches for geotechnical simulations under adverse conditions;• Instability evolution, monitoring, and failure mechanism identification of geotechnical structures;• Risk identification, probabilistic assessment, and resilience-based geohazard management;• Development of intelligent monitoring systems and multi-sensor early warning technologies;• Innovative geohazard prevention and mitigation strategies integrating sustainability principles;• Applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analytics in geotechnical decision-making;• Field investigations, case studies, and practical lessons from engineering in adverse geological environments.Appendix: This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, review articles, and case studies that contribute to advancing geotechnical safety, sustainability, and innovation in challenging geological settings.
