Gestational Diabetes and Beyond: Linking Maternal Metabolic Dysregulation to Long-Term Outcomes

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) represents a key metabolic complication of pregnancy, carrying significant implications for both maternal and offspring health. The interplay between GDM, obesity, and type 2 diabetes underscores a continuum of metabolic risk that extends beyond pregnancy, influencing cardiovascular, renal, and developmental outcomes. Despite progress in diagnostic approaches and risk stratification, challenges remain in identifying high-risk women, elucidating shared pathophysiological mechanisms, and preventing the long-term sequelae of hyperglycemia during and after pregnancy.This Research Topic aims to advance clinical and translational insights into GDM and its progression to chronic metabolic disease. Contributions are encouraged that explore novel biomarkers, genetic and metabolic predictors, and clinical management strategies that improve maternal and offspring outcomes. Studies integrating obstetric, metabolic, and molecular data are particularly welcome, as are population-based investigations addressing the influence of obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome components on pregnancy and postnatal health.Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:• Mechanistic and clinical links between GDM, preeclampsia, and type 2 diabetes.• Identification and validation of predictors for postpartum glucose intolerance and long-term metabolic risk.• Genetic and biochemical markers underlying susceptibility to GDM and diabetic complications.• Impact of obesity and metabolic syndrome components on maternal and neonatal outcomes.• Development and clinical application of risk stratification models for women with GDM.• Cardiometabolic health of offspring born to mothers with GDM.• Preventive and therapeutic interventions targeting metabolic dysregulation across pregnancy and the postpartum period.
