Glial Dynamics and Electromagnetic Fields: Unraveling Cellular Responses and CNS Health

The central nervous system (CNS) exhibits remarkable plasticity, constantly adapting to internal and external stimuli. Within this dynamic environment, glial cells—astrocytes, microglia, and oligodendrocytes—are increasingly recognized as pivotal modulators of fundamental brain function, homeostasis, and overall CNS health. Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) represent a ubiquitous and multifaceted environmental factor, ranging from therapeutic applications in neuromodulation to daily environmental exposures. While the influence of EMFs on neuronal activity is well-studied, the critical role of glial cells in perceiving, sensing, and shaping CNS responses to these fields, particularly at the cellular and molecular level, remains an area ripe for exploration. This research topic aims to consolidate cutting-edge studies examining the intricate interplay between glial cells and electromagnetic fields. We invite original research articles, reviews, and opinion pieces that delve into how glial populations mechanistically transduce EMF signals, respond to, and ultimately influence cellular physiology, CNS function, and adaptation. Contributions may cover, but are not limited to: pure biophysical mechanisms of EMF interaction with glial membranes, ion channels, and intracellular components; electrophysiological and biochemical responses of glia to EMFs; molecular and cellular mechanisms of glial activation and signaling pathways induced by EMF exposure; the involvement of glia in EMF-mediated neuroprotection, neuroinflammation, and synaptic plasticity; and the impact of varying EMF frequencies, intensities, and durations on glial function in in vitro and in vivo models. While recognizing the importance of translational insights, we particularly encourage studies focused on fundamental glial biology and biophysics in response to EMFs. Additionally, this collection will explore how these glia-EMF interactions contribute to or modulate CNS adaptation and overall brain health, including their potential in therapeutic interventions and their implications in neurodegenerative diseases. By bridging the fields of glial biology, biophysics, neurophysiology, and bioelectromagnetics, this collection aims to provide novel insights into the fundamental mechanisms underlying CNS responses to EMFs, informing both basic understanding and broader public health considerations.
