Global Child Health: Innovations Within our Reach
Global child health faces persistent challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where neonatal and under-five mortality rates remain unacceptably high despite medical advances. Equitable access to proven interventions is still limited by resource constraints, infrastructural gaps, and system inefficiencies. Recent innovations—such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and telemedicine—have made notable advances in improving pediatric care and outcomes in resource-limited settings. The introduction of artificial intelligence and nanotechnology also shows promise in advancing diagnostics and treatment. However, questions of scalability, local adaptation, and sustainable implementation remain largely unaddressed. These gaps highlight an urgent need for research and dialogue focusing on accessible, context-appropriate solutions that can drive sustainable progress in global child health. This Research Topic aims to create an inclusive forum for sharing and discussing innovations that meaningfully advance global child health, especially in LMIC contexts. Our objective is to highlight real-world and evidence-based strategies that address the leading causes of neonatal and pediatric mortality, while promoting accessibility and sustainability. Specifically, we seek to catalyze further investigation into how existing and emerging technologies—such as CPAP, POCUS, telemedicine, artificial intelligence, and nanotechnology—can be adapted, implemented, and scaled within diverse local infrastructures. We encourage submissions that address practical solutions to technical, cultural, and policy barriers; report on experiences of innovation uptake; and examine effective models for collaboration and capacity building. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, our goal is to accelerate solutions that are equitable, effective, and transformative for children everywhere, especially in settings of greatest need. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses innovations designed to improve child health outcomes in resource-constrained environments, with emphasis on feasibility, scalability, and equitable access in LMICs. We are interested in contributions addressing operational, clinical, technological, and policy innovations that advance pediatric care.We welcome submissions on topics including:- Introduction, adaptation, and scale-up of CPAP and bubble CPAP- Use of point-of-care ultrasound for pediatric care- Sustainable telemedicine models for underserved populations- Applications of artificial intelligence and nanotechnology in pediatric settings- Case studies, policy analysis, and equity-focused interventionsWe invite original research articles, systematic reviews, implementation studies, case reports, policy briefs, and perspective pieces. International collaborations and submissions led by or including authors from the Global South are particularly encouraged. Authors may request support or APC waivers as needed. Manuscripts should clearly align with the aims and scope outlined above.
