Glycemic Patterns and Early Complications in Diabetes: Clinical Implications for Risk Stratification

Diabetes is marked not only by chronic hyperglycaemia but also by substantial variability in glucose patterns that influence disease progression and complication risk. Differences in glycaemic dynamics across individuals and diabetes subtypes contribute to heterogeneity in clinical outcomes, highlighting the need for improved approaches to risk stratification and early complication detection in routine practice. This Research Topic aims to advance clinical and translational insights into the role of glycaemic patterns in the development of diabetes-related complications and their early identification. Contributions are encouraged that investigate glucose variability and monitoring-based assessments, as well as their associations with microvascular and autonomic complications. Studies focusing on early markers of nerve dysfunction and approaches to complication risk assessment are particularly welcome. Research exploring interactions between glycaemic patterns and co-existing endocrine or metabolic conditions may also be considered where clinically relevant. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:Clinical significance of glycaemic variability and glucose pattern assessment in diabetes.• Monitoring-based approaches for identifying individuals at increased risk of complications.• Early detection and characterization of diabetes-related peripheral and autonomic nerve dysfunction• Microvascular complications and their relationship to glycaemic patterns and disease duration.• Clinical stratification of diabetes based on metabolic and complication-related markers.• Influence of co-existing endocrine conditions on diabetes progression and complication burden.• Population level and real-world evidence informing complication risk and clinical outcomes in diabetes.
