Green Functional Materials with Ionic Liquids and Deep Eutectic Solvents
The development of green functional materials has become increasingly important in response to growing demands for sustainable technologies in environmental protection, energy, and resource management. Among emerging green media, ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents have attracted broad attention because of their tunable structures, versatile physicochemical properties, and potential to support environmentally benign material design and processing. These systems have been widely explored as solvents, modifiers, templates, electrolytes, and functional components in the preparation of advanced materials. Their integration into polymeric, porous, carbon-based, composite, and interfacial systems has opened new opportunities for improving material functionality, structural regulation, and process sustainability. This Research Topic aims to highlight recent advances in green functional materials with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents. It seeks to provide a platform for research showing how these green media contribute to the design, synthesis, regulation, and performance enhancement of functional materials. Despite substantial progress, important challenges remain in understanding the roles of ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents in material formation and function, clarifying structure–property relationships, improving stability and recyclability, and translating laboratory studies into practical technologies. This collection welcomes contributions that address these challenges through innovative material design, mechanistic investigation, and application-oriented studies, with particular emphasis on environmentally benign strategies and sustainable material systems. This Research Topic welcomes submissions on the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of green functional materials with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, polymeric and porous materials, carbon-based materials, composite materials, membranes, gels, interfacial and nanostructured materials, and materials for adsorption, separation, catalysis, sensing, energy, and environmental remediation. Studies involving ionic liquids or deep eutectic solvents in material preparation, structural regulation, performance optimization, or process design are particularly encouraged. We welcome Original Research, Review, and Mini Review articles that provide new insights into the development and applications of these emerging green functional materials.
