Gut Endocrine Adaptations to Bariatric and Metabolic Interventions
Bariatric surgery and metabolic endoscopic interventions can lead to substantial changes in appetite regulation, glucose homeostasis, body weight, and metabolic health. Although these effects are partly related to anatomical restriction and altered nutrient absorption, increasing evidence suggests that changes in gut endocrine function also play an important role.Altered nutrient delivery, gastrointestinal transit, and intestinal anatomy may influence enteroendocrine cell activity and the secretion of gut-derived hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, peptide YY, ghrelin, and oxyntomodulin. These changes can affect signalling between the gut and the brain, pancreas, liver, and adipose tissue, contributing to the physiological and metabolic outcomes observed after intervention. However, gut endocrine responses may differ according to the type of procedure, the anatomical changes produced, and individual patient characteristics. A better understanding of these responses may help clarify how bariatric and metabolic interventions influence whole-body physiology and support the development of more targeted treatment strategies.Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Changes in gut hormone secretion following bariatric surgery, metabolic endoscopy, and gut hormone-based pharmacological therapies - Effects of altered nutrient delivery, gastrointestinal transit, and mucosal function on enteroendocrine cell activity - Gut - brain signalling involved in appetite and satiety following surgical, endoscopic, and pharmacological metabolic interventions - Gut - pancreas communication and glucose regulation following bariatric and metabolic interventions - Endocrine effects of duodenal-targeted interventions, including duodenal mucosal resurfacing - The role of bile acid signalling and intestinal nutrient sensing in metabolic improvement after intervention - Comparative gut endocrine effects of surgical, endoscopic, and pharmacological approaches - Interactions between GLP- 1 based therapies and bariatric or metabolic endoscopic procedures Topic editors: Noppachai Siranart, Steven Steinway Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/84628/gut-endocrine-adaptations-to-bariatric-and-metabolic-interventions
