Gut Microbiota in Host Health: Colonization Resistance and Ecological Resilience
Gut microbiota is a highly dynamic ecosystem that profoundly influences host health through metabolic, immunological, and ecological interactions. Growing evidence highlights its crucial role in maintaining gut homeostasis, preventing pathogen colonization, and shaping physiological responses to environmental and dietary factors. Despite rapid advances in microbiome research, the mechanisms underlying host-microbe interactions and microbial community resilience remain incompletely understood.Topics of interest include molecular mechanisms of colonization resistance against enteric pathogens, microbial metabolites and host physiology, microbiota-immune system crosstalk, and host-microbe interactions governing gut homeostasis. We also encourage studies examining microbiome responses to antibiotics, dietary shifts, infections, and contaminants; diet-microbiota interactions in health and disease resistance; precision microbiome therapeutics; genetic determinants of host-microbiota co-evolution; and the contributions of the virome and mycobiome to microbial community dynamics and pathogen exclusion. This collection aims to provide new mechanistic insights and identify innovative strategies for promoting host health through microbiome-based interventions. We welcome original research, reviews, and meta-analyses that advance our understanding of the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota promotes host health, protects against infection, and maintains ecosystem stability. We particularly encourage studies that integrate molecular, cellular, immunological, and ecological perspectives to identify innovative microbiome-based strategies for improving human health. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Host-microbiota interactions regulating intestinal barrier function and immune homeostasis-Microbial metabolites and molecular mechanisms underlying beneficial effects on host physiology-Mechanisms of colonization resistance against enteric pathogens, including Clostridioides difficile, Salmonella and antibiotic-resistant Enterobacteriaceae -Ecological resilience, microbial community stability and recovery following antibiotic-induced dysbiosis-Diet, environmental exposures and host factors shaping microbiota function and disease resistance-Contributions of the virome, mycobiome, keystone species and microbial interaction networks to ecosystem stability and pathogen exclusion-Microbiome-based therapeutic approaches, including probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, postbiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation, for restoring protective microbiota function-Genetic determinants of Host-microbiota co-evolution Topic editors: Sandipan Banerjee, Sohini Banerjee Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82180/gut-microbiota-in-host-health-colonization-resistance-and-ecological-resilience
