Harnessing Agricultural Residues for Sustainable Livestock Feeding under Climate Change and Drought Conditions

Due to climate change and droughts, livestock production systems are facing significant challenges in terms of sustainability. Nutritional strategies that optimize feed efficiency and precision feeding are necessary to mitigate the negative effects of climate change and feed scarcity. It is possible to reduce reliance on traditional feedstuffs by using alternative feedstuffs, particularly drought-tolerant forages. Agri-industrial by-products can also be strategically incorporated into animal diets to improve resource use efficiency and to support circular agriculture. It is therefore necessary to evaluate nutritional, managerial, and environmental aspects of livestock production to ensure effective drought management in the face of climate change. This Research Topic aims to advance knowledge and innovation in sustainable animal agriculture by focusing on the valorization of agricultural residues into feedstocks as a drought mitigation and resilience strategy. Key objectives include examining the effectiveness of residue-based feeds in supporting animal nutrition and productivity, evaluating novel treatments and processing technologies, and assessing environmental, economic, and social outcomes. The collection further seeks to foster cross-sectoral dialogue between feed technologists, animal scientists, agronomists, and sustainability experts to accelerate the adoption and adaptation of these circular approaches. Contributions addressing both technological advancements and practical implementation, including case studies and interdisciplinary frameworks, are especially welcome. To gather further insights in the responsible conversion of agricultural residues for drought-resilient livestock systems, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Innovative physical, chemical, and biological treatments for enhancing the feed value of crop residues• Case studies on integrating residue-based feedstocks into livestock production under drought or climate-stressed conditions• Life cycle analysis and environmental impact assessment of residue valorization approaches• Socio-economic impacts and barriers to adoption of circular bioeconomy practices in livestock farming• Policy frameworks, extension strategies, and capacity-building for sustainable residue utilization in rural communitiesThe Research Topic welcomes a variety of article types, including Original Research, Reviews, Case Studies, Perspectives, and Short Communications.
