Harnessing Artificial Intelligence in Sports Science: Enhancing Performance, Health, and Education Vol. II

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly become one of the most transformative technologies in sports science, enabling significant advances in athlete performance analysis, sports medicine, physical education, and health promotion. The first volume of this Research Topic demonstrated how machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, wearable technologies, and predictive analytics can support individualized performance profiling, injury prevention, tactical analysis, intelligent educational systems, and evidence-based decision-making. The contributions also highlighted important challenges, including model interpretability, ethical implementation, and the integration of AI into real-world sporting environments. Since then, rapid developments in multimodal AI, computer vision, generative AI (GenAI), large language models (LLMs), AI agents and chatbots, and increasingly rich sports datasets have transformed the research landscape. Volume II aims to capture these emerging advances while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between sports scientists, data scientists, engineers, clinicians, and practitioners.Despite remarkable progress, several scientific and practical challenges continue to limit the widespread adoption of AI in sport. The increasing availability of tracking systems, wearable technologies, event data, computer vision, physiological monitoring, and commercial sports databases has generated vast quantities of heterogeneous information that remain insufficiently integrated into comprehensive decision-support systems. Furthermore, the emergence of foundation models, GenAI, and autonomous AI Agents creates new opportunities while simultaneously raising questions regarding reliability, interpretability, fairness, privacy, and responsible implementation. This Volume II aims to advance the next generation of intelligent sports analytics by promoting innovative research that integrates AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and multimodal data analysis across sports performance, sports medicine, physical education, and health. We seek contributions that develop, validate, and translate advanced computational methods into practical applications capable of improving athlete performance, injury prevention, coaching, education, health management, and evidence-based decision-making in sport. Specifically, this Research Topic “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence in Sports Science: Enhancing Performance, Health, and Education” explore the transformative impact of AI on sports science, encompassing performance analysis, sports medicine, and physical education. By collecting interdisciplinary contributions, we seek to enhance knowledge and practice in these domains for improved athlete care and performance optimization. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, case studies, and methodological papers focused on, but not limited to, the following areas:1. AI in Performance Analysis• Computer vision and tracking analytics. • Performance prediction and tactical modelling. • Key Performance Indicators and multimodal analytics. 2.
