Harnessing Digital Health Technologies to Strengthen Health Systems, Improve Population Health Outcomes, and Advance Universal Health Coverage in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
The rapid expansion of digital technologies presents an unprecedented opportunity to transform public health in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). From mobile health applications and telemedicine platforms to artificial intelligence-driven diagnostics and digital surveillance systems, these innovations hold the potential to bridge longstanding gaps in healthcare access, equity, and quality — particularly in resource-constrained settings where traditional health systems remain fragile and fragmented.Realizing this potential requires context-sensitive design, robust governance frameworks, community engagement, and sustained investment in digital literacy and infrastructure. This Research Topic invites contributions that critically examine the role of digital health technologies in building resilient health systems and advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across LMICs.We welcome original research, reviews, and perspectives addressing, but not limited to:o Mobile health (mHealth) interventions — design, delivery, and effectiveness for disease prevention, maternal and child health, and chronic disease management in LMICso Artificial intelligence and machine learning in clinical decision support, diagnostics, disease surveillance, and health system optimizationo Telemedicine and digital primary care — expanding access to specialist care in remote and underserved communitieso Digital health data systems — electronic health records (EHRs), health information exchanges, and interoperability challengeso Data governance, privacy, and security — ethical frameworks for health data use in LMICso Health system strengthening — digital tools for supply chain management, workforce training, and service delivery improvemento Digital disease surveillance and epidemic preparedness — real-time monitoring, outbreak response, and One Health approacheso Digital health equity — addressing the digital divide, gender gaps, and inclusion of marginalized populationso Community engagement and digital health literacy — co-design approaches and participatory implementation strategieso Policy and regulatory frameworks — national digital health strategies, UHC financing, and cross-sector partnershipsWe acknowledge the initiation and support of this Research Topic by University College London’s RDR Centre of Digital Public Health in Emergencies (dPHE).
