Harnessing light for Metabolites synthesis: innovations in marine algae biotechnology

Microalgae have emerged as a promising bioresource for sustainable biotechnological applications, aligning with global efforts towards eco-friendly solutions. The extraction and utilization of microalgae-derived metabolites hold great potential across various innovative fields, including wastewater treatment, biomaterials, energy, agriculture, aquaculture, food, and healthcare industries. Bioactive compounds such as carotenoids, terpenoids, fatty acids, phytohormones, carbohydrates, vitamins, peptides, and polyphenols have garnered particular interest. The goal of this research topic is to address the challenges and opportunities associated with harnessing the biotechnological potential of microalgae, particularly through light modulation. We aim to explore how varying light quality and intensity can drive metabolic processes in photosynthetic organisms, thereby enhancing the growth and production of valuable metabolites. By integrating fields such as algae biotechnology, physiology, ecology, bioinformatics, genetics, biochemistry, and engineering, we seek to maximize biomass yields, optimize health-related bioactivity, and advance the overall cultivation and utilization of microalgae. This research topic invites contributions that explore the use of light and photosynthesis as tools to boost microalgae production. Areas of interest include:o Environmental modulation of light climates to impact carbon allocation in microalgae.o Genetic manipulations, metabolic engineering, and synthetic biology to optimize specific biochemical pathways.o Computational modeling to illuminate, predict, and manipulate metabolic pathways for biosynthesis and bioactive compound production. The scope extends to creating a platform for discussing recent advances in this field and envisioning a future where microalgae are integral to the development of eco-sustainable production systems. We encourage authors to submit Original Research and Review articles that advance the field of algae biotechnology. Submissions should include results, approaches, mechanisms, and perspectives that enhance our understanding and application of microalgae in biotechnology.Authors are expected to provide comprehensive insights into how light modulation and integrative scientific approaches can revolutionize the production and utilization of microalgae-derived metabolites. This research topic aims to foster a collaborative scientific environment that propels marine algae biotechnology towards new frontiers of innovation and sustainability.
