Harnessing Microbial Formulations with Pre-emptive Approach Toward Plant Protection

Harnessing microbial formulations with a pre-emptive approach toward plant protection is an emerging area that seeks to revolutionize crop resilience by moving from traditional reactive responses to more strategic, preventative interventions. Recent research has demonstrated that carefully selected and formulated microbial communities can be introduced ahead of pathogen or pest challenges to prime plant immunity, occupy ecological niches, and provide ongoing benefits to plant health. However, despite advances in understanding microbial function and plant-microbe interactions, significant knowledge gaps remain—particularly in translating laboratory findings to robust, field-ready solutions, ensuring performance under diverse agronomic environments, and understanding long-term impacts on agricultural ecosystems. This Research Topic aims to gather and synthesize breakthroughs that advance the design, application, and integration of microbial formulations for proactive crop protection. Key objectives include elucidating the mechanisms by which early microbial establishment prevents disease and pest outbreaks, optimizing formulation and delivery systems for maximal persistence and efficacy, and exploring how predictive frameworks can support well-timed, field-wide interventions. By integrating insights from molecular biology, ecology, agronomy, and formulation science, we seek to highlight innovative strategies and technologies that can sustainably protect crops, enhance yield stability, and reduce reliance on chemical pesticides. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses foundational research as well as applied and translational studies focused on pre-emptive microbial crop protection. Submissions may address a range of experimental scales, from mechanistic laboratory investigations to on-farm deployment and policy considerations, but should emphasize the pre-emptive and integrative nature of microbial interventions. To promote comprehensive understanding and real-world application, we welcome contributions around, but not limited to, the following themes:• Assembly and performance of microbial consortia and synthetic communities in variable agronomic conditions• Mechanisms driving pre-emptive crop protection, such as induced systemic resistance, niche pre-emption, and signalling interference• Innovations in formulation and delivery, including encapsulation technologies, application methods, and shelf-life enhancement• Development of predictive and decision-support tools integrating environmental and biological data for optimized intervention timingIntegration with Integrated Pest Management (IPM), focusing on compatibility, resistance mitigation, and environmental safety• Field validation and scalability, including multi-site trials, regulatory challenges, and economic assessment• Microbiome engineering, host–microbe–environment interplay, and the legacy of microbial applications in soil and plant systems• Cutting-edge approaches for discovery and functional validation using genomics, metabolomics, phenotyping, and imagingWe invite Original Research articles, Reviews, Mini Reviews, Methods, Technology and Code articles, Perspectives, and Brief Research Reports. Contributions utilizing interdisciplinary and data-driven approaches are highly encouraged. Topic editors: Ziaul Haque, Mohammad Haris, Udai B.
