Harnessing Plant Bioactives for Safer, Sustainable Cosmetic Developments
The exploration of plant materials for their rich phytochemical content has positioned them as advantageous candidates for use in cosmetics. These substances, highly valued for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties, offer a transformative potential for the cosmetic industry. Despite this promise, the path from plant to product is complex, necessitating robust methodologies for extraction, purification, and structural analysis, alongside stringent quality and safety assessments to meet regulatory standards and ensure consumer safety. Recent technological advancements in analytical methods such as chromatography and mass spectrometry are critical in characterizing these compounds, assuring consistency, and verifying the efficacy and safety of the cosmetic products they enhance. This Research Topic aims to showcase emerging research and developments in the field of plant-derived phytochemicals for cosmetic applications. Emphasis will be placed on state-of-the-art extraction methods that maximize yield and purity while preserving environmental integrity, including innovative approaches like ultrasound-assisted and supercritical fluid extraction. Additionally, this topic will cover advanced analytical techniques for phytochemical profiling and strategies to boost their stability and performance in cosmetic formulations. To gather further insights into efficient and sustainable practices, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Optimal extraction techniques for phytochemicals in cosmetics- Advanced methodologies for chemical and functional characterization- Strategies for enhancing the bioactivity and stability of phytochemicals in cosmetic products- Safety assessments and regulatory compliance of plant-based cosmetic ingredients- Sustainable sourcing and circular economy approaches in the cosmetic sectorBy inviting contributions from researchers and professionals across the disciplines of phytochemistry, cosmetic science, and environmental sustainability, this Research Topic aims to foster innovation and collaboration, ultimately advancing the use of plant phytochemicals in cosmetics with a focus on safety and sustainability.
